In the year 2019 all things digital prioritize “mobile first”, but not for long. Digital trends are shifting from a heavy importance on mobile experiences, over to artificial intelligence (AI). This massive shift in trending technology will have major impacts on the future of web design. Let’s talk.
There is currently a race to 5G; mostly between China and the US for the time being. But when 5G mobile data technology arrives in the next few years to hubs such as Silicon Valley and Beijing, it's going to bring with it a new race for AI developers. Self-driving cars, real time 4K VR, etc., will all require the best AI developers to reach its full potential and truly kick off the AI revolution.
Wait, what’s 5G?
To keep things simple, 5G is the successor to 4G mobile data. It’s the next generation of mobile broadband.
So, what does AI first really mean for website design and development?
Well, we all already experience it every day. We experience it when visiting Facebook and see the Amazon product you were just looking at, or when you're on Instagram and see ads for a local restaurant. This type of user experience will come to the front-end of website design. Let’s say that your regular surfing habits involve you watching video demos of a product, then the first thing you’ll see is a video demo on the homepage. If you enjoy reading content first, then appropriate content will be displayed first. It will truly be a custom user-first experience.
The next massive change we will see is super intelligent chatbots. They will be everywhere, and most websites will need to have them if they want to stay current and competitive.
When chatbots take off, copywriting skills may become as important to the industry as visual design skills are right now. Chatbots will be fast, super intelligent and will be able know exactly why you’re on a specific website in the first place. But they will still need the occasional help from copywriters and developers, they aren't human after all.
Instead of, "What can I help you with?", the chatbots of the future could ask, "Did you know that our couch is better than the other brand because of XYZ, and it costs 25% less. Just say "Buy" and we’ll have it delivered tomorrow!"
They don’t just respond to questions. “They talk. They think. They draw insights from knowledge graphs. They forge emotional relationships with customer”. Conversation as a Service (CaaS) will be the new Software as a Service (SaaS).
Ok, so what about websites?
Well, WordPress runs 30% of websites on the internet currently and this doesn't appear to be changing anytime soon. WordPress is free, open-source, and has the ability for developers to create free and paid versions of their products.
With regards to chatbots there will be hundreds of businesses that will create their own versions of chatbots to compete with those already available. The marketplace for chatbots will be similar to that for plugins.
What about Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft and Apple?
These companies will be the first to use Super Intelligent AI in all their products and services. Small companies are going to see what is working for Google and decide to replicate their success with their own versions of sophisticated AI. Also, the war between Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant, is going to get intense. One possible future scenario is that Siri might become a "Virtual Assistant" just for you. This virtual assistant will know everything about you, address, contacts, surfing habits. etc. This virtual assistant would then be able to connect with third party website chatbots for you instantaneously. (In other words, your personal AI will communicate with third party website chatbots).
Back to down Earth in 2019
Things won't change that much for us in Canada over the next year or two, largely because the rollout to 5G will likely be slower here than in the US and China. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't be mindful of what's coming next. Adopting emerging technology can be a huge step in future-proofing your business and ensuring you have the tools to scale when the time comes.
AI's weakness is our advantage
So, what is AI's weakness? Things like business, leadership roles, art, design, marketing, writing and many other arts. These industries will be very difficult for AI to replace anytime soon, even in a 5G super connected world. So, my question for you is, which industries do you think will be safe in the future from super intelligent AI Chatbots?
