Every year Pantone's experts comb the globe for new colour influences to make a prediction about the colours that will define the year ahead. This can include the entertainment industry, fashion, film, travel, art, design, as well as lifestyle and socio-economic conditions. Influences may also stem from technology, textures, relevant social media platforms and even upcoming sporting events that capture worldwide attention.
The colour experts at Pantone Colour Institute had the challenging task to select a colour for 2021 after an incredibly depressing 2020. The last year was defined by Covid-19 which brought out a lot of fear and anxiety globally. After thoughtful consideration, this year Pantone broke their tradition and announced 2 colours for the year 2021 - Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow.
"The union of Ultimate Grey with the vibrant Illuminating Yellow expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock-solid but at the same time, warming and optimistic, this year a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted, this is essential to the human spirit," said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute.
In the past 22 years, the only time two colours were chosen was in 2016 when Rose Quartz (a soft pink) and Serenity (light blue) shared the honours. This selection was based on the need to introduce something soft and kind in a zen-like period.
How would you use Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow this year?
