Over the last 20 years, Pantone’s Colour of the Year has influenced a wide range of industries including fashion, interior design, packaging design, and graphic design, plus many more. Pantone’s Colour of the Year plays an important role in setting upcoming trends, while setting a mood for the upcoming year. 2020’s Colour of the Year is Pantone 19-4052 “Classic Blue”, according to the experts at Pantone Colour Institute.
In a world driven by exponential technological growth, the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and a constant flow of advertisements and promotions from screen-to-brain, this juxtaposing blue brings with it a sense of tranquility and peace. Like the infinite sea and sky, Classic Blue is the colour of stability and depth, which encourages us to look beyond the obvious and expand our thinking, while opening up our communication so we can build connections with each other. The colour promotes self-reflection and trust, helping us to refocus our thoughts, and encourages us to trust our feelings and others. We live in a time that requires trust and this enduring blue is resilient, easily relatable and is associated with understanding and softness; making it an indisputably brilliant colour to bring us into a new decade.
Pantone could not have been clearer when picking this colour. It’s more than just a visual trend, it’s about a universal state of mind, the ability to connect with each other on a global level, to be understood and to understand, which we all seem to need and crave these days.
I’m excited to see more of this colour being used in the industry. It’s a beautiful colour and brings a sense of calm in an ever-changing fast-paced world; it’s a nice reminder to slow down and rethink, reflect and revision the road ahead. Now, the real question is what will Pantone's Colour of 2021 be? Maybe it will be a sophisticated gray-blue; perhaps it will be a warm mustard yellow that mimics the sun, or it could even be a warm earthy brown or a back-to-neutral gray.
